Mind share…Who is thinking of you first?

July 27th, 2010

Brand management in today’s business world takes on a whole new meaning when you consider the 24/7 cycle of news and information.  While Face book, Linked In and Twitter accounts are great tools, you cannot rely on them alone to bring business to your door. You need to form a strategy that will position your business to be first on the minds of your target audience.  Whether you are a large company with locations all over the world or a smaller business that caters to a local crowd, you will need to position yourself correctly so that the audience you seek can easily find you.

While we cannot ignore that social media plays a growing role in brand management today a lot more goes into it than just setting up your Twitter and Face Book accounts.  You need to invest the time researching which tools will work best for your business.  The tools you need will depend on your approach and that of your team.  You’ll need to set goals and depending on what you are trying to achieve i.e. data, statistics, analytics that will determine where your focus should be.  In order to do that you must know your goals and your purpose.  As you build your strategy you will need to make adjustments to your features.  Some things to consider when you are carving out your niche; how are you standing out from the competition?  How are you reaching out to your audience?  What makes them want you?  The principle goal regardless of your service or product should be to create a dramatic difference with what you offer compared to that of your competition.

In our last blog post we talked to you about SEO (search engine optimization) and why you need it.  SEO will enhance your brand marketing.  Strong SEO can provide a multi-dimensional experience.  Add to that the exposure of your SMM (social media marketing) to get your target audience talking about you.  Today with so many different ways to channel your brand you want to be careful not to dilute the message.  You need to keep a unified front with those outlets, knowing your niche and keeping your message simple.

Having a message that is clear and concise allows your audience will become part of your brand marketing.  They will generate word of mouth advertising.  In the world of marketing and advertising it’s sometimes best to let others speak for you.  You will see this in action with comments and sharing of your blog posts, in re-tweets on Twitter and even better recommendation for a job well done.  When people share your posts or their experiences with your business they are doing your work for you.  This gives you the mind share with your audience and when they think of you first they will tell others.

The times they are a changing.  The hard sell is becoming extinct.  Consumers have more control today than ever.  They can choose to filter what they see and hear. They can actually ask questions of companies and get answers, publicly through tweets, blog post comments, and Face Book conversations.  Content marketing although very time consuming is the wave of the future.  Communicating and engaging with your current and potential clients builds that relationship that today’s consumer is looking for. Every conversation with a potential client does not need a sales pitch.  In fact listening to their wants and needs as well as their ideas will mean more in the long run.

In today’s economy many small businesses need to make cuts to stay alive. Well thought out strategies are half the battle.  The other half…just showing up everyday.  It takes a lot of time and effort to give honest, consistent communication to your audience. In the long run it is worth the effort.  Questions?  Feel free to leave a comment and we do our best to help you take that next step.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) why EVERY company needs it.

July 15th, 2010

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) what is it and why do you need it?  If you are a small business with limited funds are you sure you are getting the best bang for your buck?  You may think that you are too small or it is too expensive, but if you can learn to create web presence – it could turn into a well you need to tap.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) in the simplest of terms is directing a higher quantity of better quality leads to your site.  In the industry folks may refer to this as Search Engine Results Page or SERPS.  Everyone with a web presence wants that, that is why you’re on the web.  However, simply going live with your website is not enough.  SEO uses techniques to make your site highly visible to the searcher, without having to sift through miscellaneous pages.  Good SEO puts your site up front and center waving a flag that says “pick me, pick me!” Using SEO will provide you a strong web presence and in return you will see positive ROI, increased brand awareness, 24/7 marketing and highly targeted trafficking.  All of this will help make your web site work for you.

Small businesses with limited budgets need to start small.  They need to identify the few “must haves” and go from there.  This will be different for every business.  SEO encompasses website content, organic search, pay per click, social media marketing (SMM) and blogs.  Within all if these entities you need to create anchor text, which will in turn provide stronger results. The great thing about being a small business is that you actually have advantages over the big guys.  Embracing these advantages and combining them with SEO will give you the results you seek.

First let’s start with your web site.  Think of this as your introduction.  A good website shows the face of your company.  It provides fresh, original content and engages your potential clients.  Larger companies do not always have the flexibility, creativity or ability to think outside the box.  With a smaller company there is no box. Your imagination is the only thing that limits you.  You can be more creative in your content. The more original your content the more hits you will attract.  Knowing your target audience you can offer an experience with your website that will make them want to come back for more.  The more often they come back, the more business you get.  This will develop into loyal customers who want to see what your business will do next.

Having your website live, full of fresh content is great, but you need to take it a step further.  Think of your online presence as a web, in the center is your website as you build out further covering a larger area you have extensions of that center.  This would include social marketing media (SMM).  This area would include, but not limited to, Face Book, Twitter, Linked In, as well as your corporate blog.  The larger your web presence the more likely you will be found.  Creating this presence will in effect build links leading back to your web site.  For the success as well as the safety of your site it is essential to have effective link building.  Although it is time consuming to fill all of these extensions with fresh content on a consistent basis this is one of the keys to success with SEO.  In a recent survey taken by TopRank Marketing Research it was found that 94% of businesses that blogged saw measurable returns within 12 months.  That number is huge!

While it may seem that you may not have the time to invest in SEO the returns are tremendous.  In our world here at 525digital we think you need to make the time.  If you can’t, we will make the time for you.   Remember to start small, focus on your key “must haves”, throw out that box and let your imagination take your business where you dream to go!

Nothing is Constant, But Change.

It’s official Facebook has risen to the top to become one of Google’s biggest competitors in the world of advertising. According to FB they have more than 400 million active users of which half of those log on everyday. These numbers are growing daily. This is an advertisers dream and shows that social media is taking the reins from traditional internet advertising.

It is a different type of internet advertising in and of itself. FB offers the “pay per click” option, similar to Google, however if you look outside that box you will see great opportunities that combines the old school techniques of building relationships with new school technology on how those relationships are built.

Facebook and it’s almighty “like” button is where it is at. This is the start of building your community and network who will become your captive audience. Those in the audience also have their own followers with their “friends”. If you post frequent, relevant content to those with like minded interests you will see your audience building as that audience shares the information with their followers. Word of mouth is key and it’s FREE!

With Facebook, you can also receive instant “reviews” and feedback on the information you share, as well as the services/products you provide. This feedback is essential in managing your online reputation and presence. It allows you to enhance your customer’s experience while utilizing the instant feedback to address small issues before they arise into full blown problems.

Facebook also has applications that allow you to utilize Twitter, extending your reach and expanding your web presence all with the click of a button. All of this can be done without adding a penny to your advertising budget.

Google is still dominant in the pay per click world of internet advertising, with their ability to better target the consumer through search. However a quick look in their rearview mirror will show that Facebook is hot on their tail. The combination of social networking and pay per click could be what pushes Facebook into the driver’s seat.

Stay tuned to 525Digital’s blog for future detailed posts comparing the ROI of Google vs. Facebook.

The proof is in the pudding?

April 2nd, 2010

That is such a funny statement to me and quite honestly. As much as I use this phrase and know what it mean’s, I wonder where the heck did it come from and what is it’s interpretation? So I did a simple search and found that the phrase originated as “the proof of the pudding is in the eating.”

It means that the true value or quality of something can only be judged when it’s put to use. The meaning is often summed up as “results are what count.”

Sounds funny but makes sense. And that’s exactly what has happened with a recent case study of ours. We like to push social media and consult companies on how important it is. (It IS what we do!) When it’s done correctly and works, it’s fantastic. It’ takes time, thought, dedication and conversation.

A few months ago we started working and volunteering our time for a nonprofit called “Friends of Maiti Nepal” in conjunction with the film “The Day my God Died”. The film addresses human trafficking and has been the main tool for the nonprofits marketing and fundraising.

The film was put on you tube by ITVS for free viewing. Out of all the similar documentaries, the max ‘hits’ achieved was on a high rating of about 35,000 hits. We have been pushing awareness for this film and non profit through the use of twitter and facebook for several months now. The film just celebrated over 100,000 hits! The highest ‘hit’ documentary by ITVS right now!

In addition to celebrating that 100,000 landmark, the conversation on the Friends of Maiti Nepal fan page has been taken over by fans who are now organizing their own local fundraising events and sing the forum to collaborate.

Not only does it feel good to be a part of this, selfishly it shows…”THE PROOF IS IN THE PUDDING!” Get social now.

XOXO Cindy Levine/Principal

Quality Assurance

March 8th, 2010

Before launching a website, it is imperative to make sure the site is 100% functional without errors. This is called the QA phase (quality assurance). Here are 8 things that should definitely be on that check list.

1. browser compatibility - Sites look different on different browsers and on different operating systems. Many developers think that most people are on PCs with internet explorer, which might be true, but what happens when your client is on a Mac with Leopard? The fact is that different people use many different browsers and browser versions. Because of this, it is important to check how your website looks in ALL possible browsers.

Here is a list of the most widely used browsers and browser versions that should be checked for compatibility:

http://wiki.jumba.com.au/wiki/List_of_browsers

2. Proofread - Sounds simple and maybe you already reviewed the site yourself. However, have someone else go through the whole site. A second set of eyes usually finds a second set of errors. Your content on your site is representative of how professional and knowledgeable you are.

3. Passwords – Make sure to have all usernames and passwords to the site including ftp, root access, server, and data base. This can become very annoying when you are ready to launch and cant due to no access.

4. Check your links! Never assume. Check everything. Never have a link that is broken on a live site. Make sure the link goes to the right page and if if needs to open in a new window. This is a great tool for checking all your links http://validator.w3.org/checklink

5. Functionality - Make sure all forms, APIs, widgets, etc. are functional. Check all auto-response emails and test database connectivity to be sure they are accepting the data. Run data through the forms, test the validation, and make sure the emails are coming in the format specified.

6. Analytics – In order to understand who is coming to your site, where they came from, and ultimately how successful your site is converting users, you need to install an analytics program. We recommend using google for your analytics program as it is so robust with features and reporting.

7. SEO foundational tools must be in place. Unique, optimized page titles and meta data are vital for search engine visibility as they tell search engines, and your visitors, what is on the page and what each page is about. Titles and meta data that have been copied and pasted or replicated across other pages on the site will only confuse the search engines so be sure to create custom, unique titles and meta data for each and every page possible.

google_seo

. The website has been successfully submitted to the major search engines

. Unique, relevant content has been strategically and naturally placed throughout the site to help the search engines deem your site as a relevant, authoritative resource for your key terms and phrases.

. Keywords are not stuffed throughout the site’s pages or coding. Like content, these should be added strategically and only for authentic reasons. Keyword stuffing does NOT work!

We recommend that you hire a professional company to review and advise you on your SEO strategy. There are several ways that you can produce free traffic. People start with search engines to hit upon the exact thing they’re looking for. Whether through paid or natural search, we at 525digital can make sure you’re at the top of the list and people are landing right where they should be.

Consumers are increasingly finding companies products and services simply by visiting their favorite search engines. 525digital will ensure your company can be found when they are looking for you. Because we understand that, as wonderful as our clients sites may be, it means nothing if people can not find you. It’s what happens when creativity and technical know-how work together and it’s why our clients come out on top in their industry.

5-4-3-2-1-0 – Get Ready for the Launch!

March 5th, 2010

What was your experience last time you launched your site?

It is 525digital’s goal to ensure we consult you through a strategic launch that make sense for the both the developers and the client. Many times the client has a set deadline. It is imperative that whichever agency you choose they take you through a strategic timeline to ensure the end result is a timely, successful launch. There is nothing worse than missing a deadline or rushing to the end with missing images, content, or information.

There is a process that your agency should follow. All links should be workings, all browsers should be tested, all content reviewed, QA process complete etc.  With that said, please take the following advice…. please dear clients who want to launch a new site for a huge event – make sure your technical staff does not go a way on some adventure where there is no cell service and he holds the key to all information. And secondly, please don’t wait until the last minute to request must have content changes, added links etc.  It changes the dynamics of the focus during the launch and can create issues.

Stick to the defined task and know that what we call the ‘red zone’, changes and alterations will have to wait.  You must freeze the site several days before launch. It is better to wait and have a functioning site, then run to the finish line with problems or untested material.

Assume there will be a need to communicate for a good 48 period and make sure anyone is on the same page and any last minute errors or details can be addressed immediately. This open line of communication will make the launch much smoother.  525digital has a comprehensive proven process.  This isn’t our first rodeo! We ensure our clients meet their deadlines along the way so that we can deliver a timely and successful launch that ultimately ends with a very happy client.

p.s.  If you want itemized details on what your agency should be doing, hang tight for our next blog – line for line we’ve listed check points to keep in your back pocket and your agency on it’s toes.

Giving feels good

February 26th, 2010

EDITED_charityCharity rules! Over the last week we have been dedicating lots of time to the Friends of Maiti Nepal’s online strategy. Their mission is to generate awareness and stop the trafficking of young girls in Nepal. Learning about the particulars of this topic makes me feel ill. It is hard for me to imagine the hell these girls go through, all for someone’s else monetary gain. But now that I am done the research, I can’t wait to help the cause.

Giving is so important to everyone’s career, and as an entrepreneur I should have figured this out a long time ago. Better late than never!

Due to my business partners charitable past, I had the opportunity to spend quality time with the head founders of this charity. They are a group of highly dedicated individuals – very smart, entrepreneurial, experienced, and just plain nice giving people who care. They are so passionate and understand how the internet can really push them to the next level.

However, they didn’t grow up in the internet revolution and are not versed in social media, website design, digital strategy, etc. Ding dong the light goes on! Maybe my skills can be of use here! This is very exciting to me and I cant wait to do what I can to introduce this cause to the world of social media and strategic online strategies. Although we are still several weeks from launching an incredible social campaign and new website — we thought we’d share our experiences along the way as we help them achieve their goals.

“Where there is charity and wisdom, there is neither fear nor ignorance.”

Thank you Joe, Brigitte, Andy, and Cindy for opening my eyes.
